The Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering represents the foremost physical sciences and engineering research facility within Australia. The School has a staff complement of around 200, including more than 70 academic research staff and over 60 PhD students. Research ranges from the fundamental to the applied, and includes a broad range of both experimental and theoretical work, often going hand in hand. The School comprises seven departments or centres, each with its own specific research interests, however, most work is interdisciplinary and directed towards the School's primary research thrusts of: materials science and engineering, lasers, nonlinear optics and photonics, nanotechnology and mesoscopic physics, physics of atoms, molecules and the nucleus, plasma physics and surface science, physics and the environment.
