This view of the School's exterior shows the east end of the Cockroft Building and the remains of the homopolar generator (which now survives as a sculpture). This enormous machine was build during the 1950s - it used mains power to spin up two fifty ton rotors to very high speed then the circuit was reversed producing a colossal current. The machine was used for various experiments including powering up of an early version of the H1-NF plasma containment facility.
