About the Australian Synchrotron Summer School

The Australian Synchrotron will open in 2007, driving new science and expanding career options for young Australian scientists. For the first time, scientists from Australian universities, government laboratories and industry will be afforded routine and reliable access to a local state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation source. The size of the domestic user base is expected to increase dramatically, and scientists across a huge range of disciplines need to be ready to take advantage of this new R&D tool. Photons @ Work will provide a grounding in synchrotron science and explore the opportunities it brings. This Summer School, to be held at ANU 27 January – 5 February 2004, will be modeled on those run annually in the USA and Europe. Speakers will be internationally respected experts, drawn from both overseas and Australia. The Summer School program will combine formal teaching and lecture sessions with informal discussions and tutorials and provide ample opportunities to mix with presenters in a social setting.

Target Audience

The primary target audience is young scientists (including honours students, graduate students and early-career researchers) from Australia and overseas in the biological, medical, chemical, earth, materials and physical sciences and engineering. These applicants will be given preference. Experienced synchrotron practitioners will be welcome, space permitting. The level of mathematics and physics will be at a moderate scale, suitable for graduate students with a science major, with an emphasis on conveying key points of understanding to a multi-disciplinary audience. The Summer School will enable people not yet using synchrotron radiation to identify new experimental techniques relevant to their area of study and current synchrotron users to enhance their skills.

Objectives

We aim to:

  • inform and educate young scientists and potential users of the Australian Synchrotron Research Program facilities and the Australian Synchrotron
  • increase the domestic synchrotron radiation user base
  • raise awareness of the scientific opportunities afforded by synchrotron radiation
  • raise awareness of Australian synchrotron radiation research and expertise
  • raise awareness of the Australian Synchrotron as an important new national facility
  • enhance the potential for interaction or collaboration with both international and domestic invited speakers.

Venue

The venue for the Summer School is the Leonard Huxley Lecture Theatre in the Leonard Huxley Building on the ANU campus (building #56 at grid reference B4 on the campus map. See also this searchable map).
