Thursday, 24 May 2001, 11.00am Link Building Seminar Room Dr Shin-Ho Chung Department of Theoretical Physics Mechanisms of Ion Permeation Across Biological Ion Channels ABSTRACT: Because all electrical activities in the brain, including communication between cells and the influence of hormones and drugs on cell function, are regulated by the opening and closing of ion channels, understanding their mechanisms at a molecular level is a fundamental problem in biology. In the past few years, the research effort of our Group has been devoted to developing a theoretical model of ion channels of excitable membrane. The members of our Group - Shin-Ho Chung, Matthew Hoyles, Toby Allen and Ben Corry - will give a brief overview of some of the research projects we are carrying out currently. |
