Governance of the Centre for Complex Systems

The Centre for Complex Systems operates within the guidelines for Centres of the Institute of Advanced Studies of The Australian National University, under the management responsibility of a Coordinator, reporting to the Director of the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Professor J.S. Williams, FAA, FTSE.

Until 2005 the Centre operated under the advice of members of an Advisory Board.

At the Board meeting of 20 January 2005, the Board formally dissolved itself to make way for a governance structure reflecting the Centre's new role as host of COSNet — a structure more representative of the ANU and other ACT researchers among the 50 Founding Participants in the ARC funding application for COSNet, and other researchers outside the traditional Physics and Mathematics tradition of the Centre.

At a preliminary meeting on 2 December 2005, it was agreed to form a Management Committee with a composition based on the above guidelines. The working budget of the Centre would be the ANU's pledged contribution to COSNet ($20,000 per annum).

The Management Committee consists of:

Coordinator Professor M.T. Batchelor: DTP, RSPhysSE and CMA, MSI
Member A/Prof. T. Aste: DAM, RSPhysSE
Member Professor R. Dewar: DTP, RSPhysSE
Member Dr. M. Shats: PRL, RSPhysSE

MSI = Mathematical Sciences Institute
CMA = Centre for Mathematics and its Applications
DAM = Department of Applied Mathematics
DTP = Department of Theoretical Physics
PRL = Plasma Research Laboratory
